MIXED REVIEWS (AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE)

Reporting, transcribing, translation, perception : these mental operations have for long animated aesthetic reflection. Christian Marclay, a musician and plastic artist, has decided to toy with them. To a person who translates into sign language, he has asked to retranscribe written summaries of musical performances. From one translation to another, from the listening process to the written words and to signs which are here silenced, a language of signs emerges which is like a hybrid and reinvented body, evocative of a music conductor’s gestures.
