Aldo Rossi’s observation – “it is if at the decisive moments of history, architecture reproposed its own necessity to be a ‘sign’ and ‘event’ in order
to establish and shape a new era” – could be the subheading of this film. It is well known that a town is the outcome of a long history continuously rebuilt. Here, this history takes place in a working class area in Montreal, which was welcoming Irish immigrants into its redbrick houses up to the 1970s. Industrialisation drove them away. Today, the moving of the oldest house in the area marks a fresh sign in the history of the place. (FM)
