Who is speaking? Where are they speaking from? These are recurring questions in Valérie Mréjen’s work. We hear statements like “I’m listening to a record” or “I’m tidying up my cabinets”, while the screen shows images from 1970s mail order catalogue Manufrance, featuring a series of quintessentially normative situations. The “I” is hollowed out by these implicit injunctions, recited like the dull litany of an ordinary day. (NF)
