What is conveyed by a building, an image, a space? On the screen, in a tight frame, a hand feels around, barely touches, feels traces on a stone-wall, traces that we couldn’t possibly interpret. Speer, the Nazi regime’s official architect, built the building in Nuremberg. This is a simple enough gesture but it carries with it the ambivalences and paradoxes inherent in the act of conserving, as in the act of destruction, which are primarily political. (NF)Katinka Bock
