MOFFIE

Oliver Hermanus

Oliver Hermanus
To be a ‘moffie’ means to be weak, effeminate. In 1981, a young gay teenager, Nicolas, 16, is due to do his military service in the South African Defence Force on the Angolan border. South Africa’s racist and segregated white minority government is involved in a conflict with communist Angola to stop the ‘black menace’. Nicolas is sent to the front. He has to face the horrors of war and the brutality of the army. His situation is made even more difficult by the fact that he is having an affair with another soldier.
