A VIDA SÃO DOIS DIAS
LIFE LASTS TWO DAYS

Brazil / 2022 / Colour / 82’
World Premiere

A mysterious manuscript discovered by chance, twins, two countries, books passed from one person to another… Leonardo Mouramateus deals out these ingredients like playing cards. With toing and froing, forks in the path and a game of false mirrors between the characters, the director takes great pleasure in losing us and playing with echoes, as he does with the actors who reappear in other forms. And in five chapters, each devoted to a figure like in Tarot cards – the castle, the cheat, the visionary, etc. – the film takes us from Rio de Janeiro to Lisbon. The threads cross, stretch, twist and tangle. A blurring is orchestrated between mises en abyme and subtle riddles that pepper the film, with micro-shifts, secret connections and discrete distinctive features. The most imperceptible everyday life and its routine can then lead to the strangest situations with playful resonances, as the story messes around with cause and effect. The events are like the elements of one big game, but a light-hearted game. The evocation of astrology seems to suggest it, to be understood as a metaphor for events and what might decide their sequence. This merry-go-round of palimpsests and correspondences reveals a delight in invention, redoubled in Mouramateus’ case by his obvious pleasure in creating images with a great economy of means. With the rigour of its shots, the humour of its frames and its play of colours, this movie jubilantly reminds us that film makes it possible to create a world of signs that can be taken as potential beginnings of stories. Above all, is it a tribute to arrangement? This appears to be hinted at by the flowers arranged in delicate bouquets dotted throughout the film.
