Forquilhas is a film about water and its physical and metaphysical importance: a road-movie that lets itself flow with the water. An essay-film bringing together different forms, genres and approaches and, by this, creates a kaleidoscope-like, holistic view of water.
We document and reflect the people´s existential relations with water in two extreme regions: Northeast – Brazilian semi-arid Sertão with its problems and solutions for the constant drought and Nothern-German Dithmarschen, a region below sea-level characterized by a constant fight against water and its destruct ive force. The protagonists tell us their stories related —directly or indirectly— to water; and also introduce us to the ethnological and philosophical background : the —very similar— forms of social organization in the fight for or against water, the relation between mankind and nature, our determination by myths, legends, religion and other cultural traditions.
