In the United States, to replace the soldiers gone to Iraq or Afghanistan, flat daddies have been created. A flat daddy is a full sized head to chest photograph of the fathers or husbands in their handsome uniforms, produced on rigid cardboard. This portable dad can participate in various family activities. In Tokyo’s neighbourhood the women have disappeared. Alone, men are trying different things to replace them. Some are dressing up in women’s clothes, others are sculpting and forming realistic replicas made of silicon, while others are still building virtual Tamagochis girlfriends and creating holograms of women with whom they can communicate.
