In a polluted forest after a nuclear apocalypse live a scientist and his outmoded equipment for strange audio experiments, his sweet but crackpot son and a woman who has just escaped from the nearby city. Prequel to his earlier film 2045 Carnival Folklore, Blood Echo borrows from the genre films that Naoki Kato is fond of. Bathed in a impure black and white reminiscent of the 1950s, the film seems to be contaminated by something else as well – the sound, fruit of a collaboration with the composer Hiroyuki Nagashima. From sound to blood, we find ourselves immersed in a bewitching atmosphere between digital and low- tech futurism, with very contemporary splashes of colour. (N.F.)
