Dana Kavelina
Kyiv artist Dana Kavelina (b. 1995) ranges across books, illustrations, animation, painting, graphics and video as she tackles military violence and individual/communal trauma through feminist/gender prisms. Here she draws upon a mammoth existing work, five-hour found-footage online documentary To Watch the War (2018), to craft an exquisitely surreal miniature that tackles the hardest of subjects with a delicate touch. Amateur video shot during the Donbas conflict is repurposed for anti-war ends in combination with Dana Kavelina’s poetry, animations, staged tableaux and archival materials from the Stalinist 1930s.
