“Simone Barbès is a character with no fear or reserve - she’s quirky and excessive. Her verve is in the same vein as characters from popular cinema like Arletty. Here, in continuous time, she goes through three nocturnal situations: her work, an outing to a night club and her ‘escorted’ journey home. Simone Barbès’ moves are pure theatre, or hysteria: that is her distance. At no point is there any spirit of vengeance, nastiness or feminist morality at all. Quite the opposite - Simone is a very emancipated, modern character a kind of Saint of her day.”
