Miséricorde, Misericordia

Alain Guiraudie

France, Spain, Portugal | 2024 | 103’

Jérémie returns to his hometown for the funeral of his former boss, the village baker. He decides to stay for a few days with Martine, the man’s widow. A mysterious disappearance, a threatening neighbour and a priest with strange intentions make Jérémie’s short stay in the village take an unexpected turn…

Alain Guiraudie’s cinema is distinguished by its rural and popular roots, which enable him to take us on a highly sensory journey to meet characters and places, tackling themes such as homosexual desire and the representation of the working class. Miséricorde follows in this vein, inviting the double weight of silence and desire into its police plot. Catherine Frot makes her very first appearance in the world of the filmmaker, who has a habit of casting little-known actors, with the occasional popular figure, such as Pierre Deladonchamps in L’Inconnu du Lac or Hafsia Herzi in Le Roi de l’évasion. This latest feature also features Félix Kysyl and Jean-Baptiste Durand, director of Chien de la casse, and for the first time in front of the camera.

“Guiraudie reaches new heights with his virtuoso, gourmet thriller” - Télérama
