The Université Laboral in Gijón (1946-57) is, along with El Valle de los Caídos (‘‘The Valley of the fallen’’), a paragon of monumental architecture from the Franco period. Conceived as a closed city, grandiose and self-contained, today reinvented as a ‘‘City of Culture’’, its buildings were a ‘‘socio-pedagogical’’ laboratory in which was put into practice the future model intended for the country.
