Les SentiersParallels Screens
Each year, FIDMarseille and Fotokino travel on this screen meant for viewers of all ages, both children and adults. On these Paths (Sentiers), eyes share the discovery of generous films and sensitive works whose imaginary worlds and purposes can challenge each and every one of us.
This year, Jason and the Argonauts bring us together.
Ray Harryhausen, a specialist in stop-motion animation, is in charge of special e ects and the film is all the more surprising. The awakening of Talos the giant, the attack of the skeletons, the confrontation with the hydra, are so many scenes that marked forever the history of cinema and the memory of many spectators.
A creative workshop is proposed in accompaniment of the projection to discover the secrets of manufacture of the film and to understand some special e ects, by manufacturing its own sequence animated with figurines and a simple camera.
Vincent Tuset-Anrès, Karen Louÿs, Fotokino.
At the crossroads of visual arts, Fotokino organises the Laterna magica festival every December; together with workshops, exhibitions, meetings all year long, in their Studio, in Marseille, for all audiences.
Les Sentiers Expanded
A mother decides to take her daughter on a journey through Aleppo where she was born and raised. Personal stories are woven into those of the country. Meetings with ancestors, by way of the family home, make the telling of this story both light and shocking at the same time. Those traces of the past are ruins today: dilapidated buildings, ravaged landscapes, remnants of a personal story rich with memories. Filmed by the famous director of photography, Caroline Champetier, the recent history of contemporary Syria rises up out of these images of the all too recent past. This is reflected in a title card at the beginning of the film: “We never thought this would be our last journey”. (FM)
