SHADOW PROCESSION

William Kentridge

We already know how drawing was the very material that made Kentridge’s first films, wherein each shot evolved as the drawing was morphing. Here, in this fragment from his film Ubu Tells The Truth, directed in 1997, we get a procession-like parade of paper cut-out silhouettes, where the Gothic and the grotesque inter- sperse in this rendering of the traumas of South-African history, which is at the heart of his concerns.
