In 1983, after shooting his recently-revealed posthumous movie (Visita Or Memórias e Confissões) Oliveira, a director from Porto, made a film about the “cultural image” of Lisbon – such was the subject of the RAI TV commission. This very beautiful but little-seen film was greeted with indifference: Oliveira’s so-called didacticism seems to occupy everything. And yet what we see is an unusual superimposition of speech onto the image; a film about the occultation of the clichés of this neglected culture? Always in the background through the speech of each speaker. Between the two parts of the programme (the last one also a commission from the Serralves Museum), a mystical piece of Portuguese painting from the 15th century acts as a bridge, an artwork “inhabited” here by the cinema, removed from all academicism and symbolism.
