King Lear

Jean-Luc Godard

In this twisted adaptation of King Lear, Norman Mailer tries to move the play to the American underworld, while William Shakespeare Junior (Peter Sellars), fifth of that name, goes in search of missing works of art in a world devastated by Chernobyl. In the swamps of Nyon, a few believers (including Leos Carax) try out the ideas of a nutty guru. A little known film, yet a pivotal point in Godard’ filmography, prefiguring JLG/JLG. Self-portrait in December. (V.P.)
