NOBODY’S DAUGHTER HAEWON

Hong Sang-soo

Haewon, a young student closely resembling Charlotte Gainsbourg is left to her own devices while her mother embarks on a one way trip to Canada. One may believe for a moment from the male characters’ attraction to young Haewon that this is simply a love film, however this would overlook the main plot: Haewon opening her eyes to bravery and fear, repressing something to which the film only gives two clues. Deep in the reading of The Loneliness of Dying by Norbert Elias, Haewon is no longer anyone’s daughter. (AT)Hong Sang-soo
