Fourteen years after Anatahan, Josef von Sternberg reveals to André S. Labarthe and Janine Bazin the major principles which guided him in the exercise of his art. Slightly melancholic, he mentions his ongoing experimentation but also his difficult career, between thwarted projects and impossible director’s cut. “I try to open cinema to ideas coming from literature and the arts. I was probably wrong as my career has been a failure!” (VP)
