DAISIES
Vera Chytilová
Czechoslovakia | 1966 | 74'
In this iconic film of the Czech New Wave, bursting with wild energy, the little daisies drawn by Věra Chytilová are Maria 1 and Maria 2. To escape boredom, the two young women's favorite pastime is to get invited to restaurants by middle-aged men, then gleefully reject them, causing chaos and scandal. This libertarian-spirited film, with its disjointed, fragmented narrative, offers—beneath the guise of a joyful, raw, and sharp social critique—a lucid and somber vision of women's place in 1960s society.
