Every year in early July, the FIDMarseille —Marseille’s International Film Festival— presided by Paul Otchakovsky-Laurens and directed by Jean-Pierre Rehm, proposes a programme of 150 films to approximately 25,000 spectators, in cinemas, theaters, libraries, art galleries, and in open-air amphitheaters throughout the city. The festival presents a large number of films in their world premiere as well as first films. Today, the FIDMarseille is recognized as a source of new cinemas, both documentary productions as well as fiction films.
In addition, the FIDMarseille organizes the FIDLab, a support platform for international co-production; the FIDCampus, a training workshop for Mediterranean students; and numerous, offsite screenings throughout the year.
A festival to what end? To share, with all our audiences, today’s cinemas. Yes, the cinema harbors a plurality of forms, of formats, of lengths, of approaches, and of visions. A unique moment when filmmakers from all over the world nurture our present with all they have. FIDMarseille’s roots in documentary filmmaking recall the realities of our fertile terrain, without ever forgetting that different worlds are to be found in this soil and that there are many ways to testify to them. And if testifying is urgently required, we also know that courage, aptness, and even a cheerful conviction are likewise needed, in order to make audible and visible and to move ahead. Unexpected, daring, relevant, rebellious, as surprising as our world itself: this is the kind of filmmaking the FID rejoices in championing!

SCOUTING NEW TALENTS
Many filmmakers showed their first film, met partners and distributors, and began their international career with us. For example, Apichatpong Weerasethakul screened in Marseille his first film, Mysterious Object at Noon in 2001. In 2010, he received the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
SHARING AND REFLECTING TOGETHER
2,500 films competed for selection, not to mention the 500 other films that the FIDMarseille discovered around the globe. From this wealth of films, around thirty—in world and international premieres—have been chosen for the 2014 competitions.
More than a film festival, the FIDMarseille is a veritable forum where images, words, and real-life stories intersect. All the selected filmmakers are invited to meet and discuss with the FIDMarseille audiences.
The FID wishes to articulate an expanded vision of cultural activities with the goal of reaching an ever larger and increasingly diverse public. A cinema that deals with reality—either in a documentary or fiction form—concerns us all. And we must raise awareness about its accessibility.
From the critical essays in the catalogue we have edited, to the publication of a daily, bilingual journal during the festival, and not forgetting the organization of panel discussions, the festival intends to be an active space for public thought.
One of FIDMarseille’s special features is its constant loyalty to its filmmakers and their works. Thanks to its long-standing contacts with exhibitors and distributors, selection in the FIDMarseille is nearly a guarantee for a theatrical release in France. The FIDMarseille ensures the visibility of these films via its many Cartes blanches and invitations in France and abroad. Also via its affiliation with Docalliance, which brings together six international film festivals. And also via FIDMarseille’s bilingual, monthly newsletter, which provides news of previously unknown films selected in the festival. With 57,000 subscribers, the FIDMarseille newsletter has become an international reference.
